It is the purpose of this Scholarship to promote understanding and friendly relations between the peoples of the United States and Japan.
An award recipient must act in the dual capacity of a student in learning and as an unofficial “Japanese Ambassador of Good Will.” In this respect, an awardee is expected to maintain high standards of achievement while serving as a bridge of understanding and friendship between the peoples of the United States and Japan.
QUALIFICATION: Selection of a candidate for the Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship is to be based solely on qualifications, without respect to economic status, race or religion, and shall be limited to those who are academically qualified to proceed with graduate studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Moreover, there shall be no limit as to age, and applicant may be married or single, but must be a Japanese citizen.
FIELDS OF STUDY: A scholarship may be awarded for study in the fields of history, economics, business, anthropology, culture, political science, sociology, religion, philosophy or any other subject area connected with Japanese and/or American culture, the learning of which might lead to better understanding and friendship between the peoples of Japan and the United States.
SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: The scholarship recipient will receive up to a two-year scholarship. The second year of the scholarship will depend on the recipient meeting satisfactory academic and personal conduct standards (see Revocation of Awards paragraph below). Additionally, recipients can, at their option, elect a one-year scholarship instead of the two-year scholarship. The amount of the scholarship shall be $15,000 per year. In addition, a Pacific Asian Scholarship at the University of Hawaii, which covers tuition expenses, has been awarded to CPA scholars. If the Pacific Asian Scholarship becomes unavailable due to unforeseen circumstances at the University of Hawaii, the CPASF will pay tuition expenses for the scholar. In either case, the scholarship recipient will not have to pay his/her tuition expenses. Two CPASF scholarships are available for academic year 2008-2009. The Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship Foundation Japan Committee will make the final selection of the scholarship recipient(s).
During the year of study under this Scholarship, an awardee may not accept any gainful employment or any other scholarship without prior approval of the Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship Foundation.
THE APPLICANT
QUALIFICATIONS: Both men and women are equally eligible to apply. In order to serve as an effective bridge of friendship and understanding between the peoples of the United States and Japan, he/she must have a friendly outgoing personality, a sympathetic interest in the attitudes and way of life of the people of a different culture, and the ability to communicate his/her ideas readily and effectively. He/she must also have a good knowledge of the history, culture, geography and current affairs of Japan. He/she must:
a. have maintained high standards in his/her academic studies, and must show promise of distinguished achievement.
b. demonstrate qualities of leadership, initiative, enthusiasm, adaptability, maturity, and seriousness of purpose.
c. if an undergraduate, be at the Senior level of his/her college education at the time of his/her award and must have applied for admission to the graduate program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
REVOCATION OF AWARDS: Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship awards may
be suspended or revoked or the applicant may face other sanctions if the applicant fails to meet satisfactory standards of academic performance and/or personal conduct, as determined by the Board of Trustees of the Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship Foundation, or by the institution of attendance, or if the applicant fails to remain in school for the duration of the scholarship.
APPLICANT’S CERTIFICATION: An applicant must read carefully the “applicant certification” on the application form and sign the certification to indicate his/her understanding and acceptance of the responsibilities and obligations of the award and the conditions under which the scholarship may be revoked.
MEDICAL CERTIFICATE: A medical certificate prepared by a licensed physician must be attached to his/her application. The purpose of the medical certificate is to ensure there will be no medical problems that may preclude the applicant from completing his/her study abroad.
ACADEMIC RECORD: A transcript or other official evidence of academic record at any college or university the applicant attended must be attached to his/her application.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Recommendations from two university professors must also be attached.
INTERVIEWS: The applicant may be asked to be interviewed in conjunction with the screening and final selection process.
REPORTS: A written report summarizing the year of study will be submitted to the Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship Foundation Administrative Office within six weeks after completion of the school year. The report will include the following information:
a. Study plan for the next year (for those applying for a second year)
b. Grade sheets or transcripts (if available)
c. Narrative summarizing activities, accomplishments, and difficulties encountered during the year. Please include any suggestions that may be useful to future scholars.
Reports are mandatory and are used to evaluate the scholarship recipient’s study progress. The first year report will help determine whether or not the scholarship will be renewed for the second year. Failure to submit a report may be grounds to deny the second year of scholarship or in the extreme, revocation of the title as Crown Prince Akihito Scholar. The second year report will help to evaluate the success of the scholarship recipient as well as the overall scholarship program.
