2024 Hiroshima Peace Scholars selected to represent Hawaii in Hiroshima, Japan

The Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH) is pleased to announce the selection of two scholars to represent JASH and Hawaii, as our Hiroshima Peace Scholarship (HPS) scholars. They will visit Hiroshima in summer 2024.

HPS scholars will participate in an educational trip to Hiroshima, Japan, where they will explore the history and effects of World War II, engage in collaborative activities with students in Hiroshima, and share their peace messages in Hiroshima and Hawaii.

For the next several months, the two peace scholars will participate in a JASH-designed training program for their Japan trip this summer.

The 2024 Hiroshima Peace Scholarship Delegation are:

          1. Charles Reid-Selth, attends Radford High School

          2. Mia Takahashi, attends Hawaii Baptist Academy

They will be accompanied by chaperone Ms. Jodie Chock, the Fine Arts Department Head at Kalaheo High School, who is excited to visit Hiroshima-the birthplace of her great grandmother, with the young scholars.

The Hiroshima Peace Scholarship (HPS) was founded in 2009 by Hiromi Peterson and Naomi Hirano-Omizo, retired Japanese language faculty of Punahou School, to encourage young peacebuilders and strengthen relationships between Hawaii and Hiroshima. The program is supported by the proceeds from their textbook series, Adventures in Japanese. JASH is honored to serve as an administrator of HPS since 2021.
