`Ukulele artist, Jake Shimabukuro, a fourth-generation Japanese American, and third-generation descendent of Okinawa, was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawai`i and rose to fame by becoming one of YouTube’s first artists to go viral on the internet.
At the age of four, Shimabukuro received his first music lesson from his mother on a beautiful Kamaka `ukulele. At 7 years old he attended Roy Sakuma’s `ukulele school and started performing in the annual `Ukulele Festival Hawai`i event at the Kapi`olani Park Bandstand. Jake’s biggest inspirations for playing the `ukulele came from world-renowned recording artists Herb “Ohta-san” Ohta and Eddie Kamae.
In the late-90s, Shimabukuro gained notice with local bands, “Pure Heart” and “C%N.” After both groups dissolved, Shimabukuro’s fame as a solo artist spread throughout Hawai`i and eventually to Japan. There, in 2001, he signed a historic recording contract with Epic Records/Sony Music, which formed the basis of a career punctuated by a string of instrumental `ukulele albums and performances at some of the most prestiges concert halls.
In 2006, Jake Shimabukuro’s career took another pivotal turn when a video of his performance of George Harrison’s, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” received more than 15 million views on YouTube, making it one of the world’s first “viral videos.” It exposed Shimabukuro’s talent to the world, and concert performances throughout North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia soon followed. He has since recorded and performed with music icons such as Yo-Yo Ma, Bobby McFerrin, Bela Fleck and The Flecktones, Jimmy Buffett, Willie Nelson, Ziggy Marley, Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald - and has even performed with Bette Midler for Queen Elizabeth II. Jake has also recently been appointed by President Joe Biden to serve on The National Council On The Arts.
Jake Shimabukuro continues to compose and record music, while maintaining an international concert schedule of about 150 live shows a year. He is a loving husband and proud father of two children. In addition to balancing his career with family life, Jake also remains firmly rooted in his commitment to community and music/arts education - frequently performing at schools, urging kids to find their passion and live drug-free.
