Virtual Origami Tutorial Series with Ashley Nishihara

This summer, the Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH) held a virtual tutorial series on origami with Hawaii’s Origami Swami, Ashley Nishihara. This program was created in place of some of our in-person educational programs, including Japan Day and Japan-in-a-Suitcase, which were cancelled or postponed since March due to the ongoing COVID- 19 pandemic. Dear Members and Friends of JASH: Good news! In a press conference by Japan Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu, it was announced that Japan is starting to take measures to resume international travel. Japan will be utilizing a multiple phased approach towards the reintegration of international travel; the first two phases include Thailand, Vietnam, Australia and New Zealand. The third phase includes Brunei, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Macao, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, the Republic of Korea (ROK), Singapore and Taiwan. The fourth phase includes countries in Europe and Hawaii separately from the continental United States. JASH is pleased to work alongside other community members

Wrapping Up the 2020 Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention

The Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention (APCC) is an annual homestay and summer camp in Fukuoka that welcomes delegations of 11-year-old Junior Ambassadors (JAs) from regions throughout Asia and the Pacific. JASH has the honor of serving at the liaison office for the Hawaii delegation, and since December we’ve shared about the selection of our 2020 delegation; their hard work preparing for their international adventure; and most recently, their dedication to learning more about Japan and their incredible resilience and optimism as we shifted to virtual culture and history lessons following the cancellation of this summer’s APCC trip. Hachijōjima: The Language Isle

A view of the coastline between Nakanogō and Kashitate villages On July 30, 2020, the Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH) hosted another installment in our Summer 2020 Talk-Story Series entitled, “Hachijōjima: The Language Isle.” We were very fortunate to collaborate with linguist Dr. David Iannucci, who introduced attendees to the small island of Hachijōjima and the severely endangered Hachijō language that is spoken there. Dr. David Iannucci with language consultants Mrs. Eiko Fukuda and Mr. Tōichi Okiyama Dr. Iannucci received his PhD in Linguistics from the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa in 2019.
