Special During November

Donate $1,000 to the Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH) and receive a unique kimono quilt, designed and crafted by local textile artist Ellen Godbey Carson.

Ms. Carson has donated these kimono quilts that she has designed and made to help support JASH’s mission.

Ellen Godbey Carson was born in the mountains of Tennessee, where she was moved to action by racial injustices she saw around her. She is a graduate of Harvard Law School.

In the 1980s, she represented Japanese Americans in a class action lawsuit that went to the United States Supreme Court, seeking redress for the massive deprivations of constitutional rights inflicted on these Americans during World War II. She has spoken throughout the country about these injustices and the importance of protecting constitutional rights.

She moved to Hawaii in 1987, where she has served as President of the Hawaii State Bar Association, Hawaii Women Lawyers, IHS/the Institute of Human Services), and other community organizations.

After retiring from the practice of law in 2016, Ellen has continued to be an advocate for issues of civil rights, affordable housing, LGBTQ rights, and reproductive rights. She is also a textile artist who uses vintage kimono fabrics to create new art forms and social justice messaging.

*Quantities are limited. This offer is available to those who donate $1,000 or more to the Japan-America Society of Hawaii by November 30, 2026. A variety of colors and styles are available.
