9th JASH Language Exchange (JASH LangX)
On December 13, 2025, the Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH) welcomed seven participants to its 9th JASH Language Exchange (JASH LangX), held from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM at the JASH office. The session brought together both JASH members and non-members for a friendly and interactive opportunity to practice English and Japanese in a relaxed, supportive setting.
Participants enjoyed lively bilingual conversations while building new connections and sharing perspectives on Japanese, American, and Hawaii cultures. The program began with a brief introduction to JASH, followed by a fun icebreaker activity that encouraged participants to move around the room and talk with one another to find people who matched various prompts. This interactive activity helped participants feel comfortable, encouraged conversation, and set a welcoming atmosphere for the session.
During LangX, participants are paired together for structured conversation rounds, beginning with English followed by Japanese. After each round, participants switch partners to meet someone new and repeat the format. In the final round, participants switch partners one last time and choose either language for free conversation.
With attendees representing a wide range of backgrounds and language proficiency levels, JASH LangX continues to offer a welcoming space where beginners and fluent speakers alike can connect, learn, and grow. Through language practice and cultural exchange, LangX fosters meaningful friendships and cross-cultural understanding.
Feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positive:
100% of participants strongly agreed with the statement, “I was satisfied with today’s language exchange session,” and over 80% strongly agreed with the statement, “I would like to participate in the next JASH Language Exchange session.”
Comments included:
“I’m very glad to have this opportunity to meet and converse with Japanese people who are trying to learn English like I am trying to learn Japanese. I think the format is very good and I look forward to attending the next one.”
「ふだん英語を話す機会がないので楽しかったです。」(“I don’t usually have a chance to speak English, so it was fun.”)
