Honoring Dedication: EMMA's Virtual Luncheon Celebrates Volunteers and Memories

The Ehime Maru Memorial Association (EMMA) recently held a heartfelt virtual luncheon on Tuesday, March 28, 2024, via Zoom, marking a significant occasion to honor and express gratitude to the dedicated volunteers from various local Japanese- American community groups. Hosted by EMMA, this special event celebrated the unwavering commitment of volunteers who have tirelessly contributed to the upkeep and preservation of the Ehime Maru Memorial, nestled in Kakaʻako Waterfront Park.


The virtual gathering commenced with a warm welcome and introduction from Reyna Kaneko, President of EMMA, who highlighted the organization's enduring responsibility in maintaining the memorial as a tribute to those lost in the tragic incident. Kaneko expressed heartfelt appreciation to the volunteers representing numerous organizations across Hawaii, acknowledging their steadfast dedication in ensuring the memorial remains pristine even after more than two decades since its unveiling in 2002.

Attendees were treated to a poignant slideshow showcasing highlights from this year's memorial ceremony, accompanied by new footage capturing the solemn proceedings held both in Hawaii and Japan. The virtual setting didn't dampen the sense of connection as volunteers gathered, albeit virtually, to share in the memories and reflections of the ceremony.


As a show of appreciation, volunteers were provided with special bento boxes courtesy from of Kokoro-Tei, arranged for convenient drive-through pick-up at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii earlier in the day, adding a touch of culinary delight to the occasion.


Expression of expressions of gratitude were made towards Ken Saiki, Director at EMMA, who has been instrumental in coordinating volunteer efforts over the years. Reyna Kaneko and attendees alike extended warm thanks to Ken Saiki for his tireless dedication, presenting him with a token of appreciation and affording him a moment to address the gathering, during which he expressed deep gratitude to volunteers and organizations for their unwavering support of the memorial.


As the virtual luncheon drew to a close, the president offered closing remarks, thanking attendees and volunteers alike for their participation and support. Looking ahead, she expressed hope for continued collaboration and support in the coming year, emphasizing the importance of preserving the memories enshrined within the Ehime Maru Memorial for future generations.



The Ehime Maru Memorial Association extends its profound gratitude to all volunteers for their enduring commitment and dedication, ensuring that the legacy of those affected by the tragic accident remains honored and cherished. Acting as the administrator of EMMA, Japan-America Society of Hawaii(JASH) remains steadfast in its mission to uphold the memory of the Ehime Maru incident and ensure the perpetual maintenance of the memorial.
