A Beautiful Hinamatsuri Celebration at the Consul General’s Residence
On February 25, 2026, Consul General Hideaki and Mrs. Misato Chotoku graciously opened their residence to the Japan-America Society of Hawaii for our annual Hinamatsuri celebration in honor of Girl’s Day. It was a truly special gathering, with approximately 35 guests coming together to celebrate this cherished tradition.
Hinamatsuri (Doll Festival), also known as Momo-no-sekku (Peach Festival), is traditionally observed by Japanese families to wish for the happiness and healthy growth of their daughters. Homes are adorned with elegant hina ningyo, dolls dressed in ancient court costumes from the Heian Period (794-1185), displayed in a tiered arrangement.
JASH President Reyna Kaneko opened the program with welcoming remarks, followed by a heartfelt presentation on the meaning of Hinamatsuri by Mrs. Misato Chotoku. Guests also enjoyed a special message from Kazuko Love, Tomodachi co-chair, and a sing-a-long reflecting on the significance of this festival and the enjoyment among the guests each year.
Guests spent a lovely Tea Time together, enjoying one another’s company. Mrs. Chotoku prepared special dishes using ingredients from her hometown, adding a personal touch to the gathering. Guests also contributed Japanese-inspired dishes for everyone to share. Everything was absolutely delicious!
A heartfelt MAHALO to our wonderful volunteers and the dedicated staff of the Japanese Consulate, including Consulate Chef Takahashi, for preparing a delicious array of dishes that added to the festive atmosphere. Their generosity and hospitality made this event truly special.
We look forward to celebrating Hinamatsuri again next year!
